The Secret Behind the Golden Curtain of Suite 404

“Just do it already, Isabella, before the night shift starts and that nosy nurse comes back with her charts and her fake smiles.”

Camila’s voice was as cold as the air conditioning in the VIP wing of St. Jude’s Private Hospital. She wasn’t looking at her father, who lay motionless on the bed, but at her own reflection in the darkened window of the suite. She adjusted her designer silk scarf, making sure her blowout hadn’t lost its volume during the flight from Paris.

Isabella, the older sister, hesitated for only a fraction of a second. Her hand, manicured to perfection with a deep crimson polish that looked like dried blood, hovered over the thick power cable connected to the main life-support console.

The room was filled with the rhythmic, mechanical hum of the ventilator. It was a sound that had defined their lives for the past three weeks. To the world, it was the sound of Richard Sterling staying alive. To his daughters, it was the sound of a ticking clock holding back a nine-figure inheritance.

“Think about the Hamptons estate, Isa,” Camila whispered, stepping closer, the scent of her expensive perfume clashing with the sterile smell of bleach and antiseptic. “Think about the penthouse in Manhattan. If he ‘slips away’ tonight, the probate process starts Monday. If he lingers like this for another month, the medical bills alone will eat into the liquid assets. He’s brain dead anyway. The doctors are just being polite because of who he is.”

Richard Sterling, the man on the bed, looked like a shadow of the titan of industry he once was. His skin was pale, almost translucent, and his breathing was entirely dependent on the machine. He had built a real estate empire from nothing, starting with a single hardware store in a dusty corner of the city. He had given his daughters everything: Ivy League educations, limitless credit cards, and lives of absolute luxury.

And yet, here they were, standing over him like vultures in Chanel suits.

Isabella’s fingers finally gripped the plug. “He would have wanted it this way,” she lied, her voice trembling not with grief, but with the adrenaline of a crime about to be committed. “He always said he never wanted to be a burden.”

“Exactly,” Camila nodded, her eyes gleaming with greed. “We’re doing him a favor. We’re being merciful.”

The sisters had spent the last hour arguing not about their father’s health, but about how they would split the art collection. They had laughed—actually laughed—while discussing which of his vintage cars they would sell first. They treated the hospital room like a boardroom, and their dying father like a piece of depreciating equipment that needed to be decommissioned.

Outside the door, the hallway was quiet. The VIP wing was designed for privacy, for the kind of people who didn’t want the world to see their weakness. It was the perfect place for a quiet ending.

Isabella looked at the heart rate monitor. The green line was steady, a mountain range of survival. Beep. Beep. Beep.

“On three?” Isabella whispered.

“On three,” Camila confirmed.

They didn’t notice the way the “unconscious” man’s eyelids slightly flickered. They didn’t see the way his hand, hidden beneath the heavy white linens, tightened into a faint, invisible fist. They were too busy looking at the plug, seeing it not as a life-line, but as the final barrier between them and the lifestyle they felt they deserved.

“One,” Isabella counted.

“Two,” Camila joined in, a sick smile spreading across her face.

The air in the room seemed to grow heavy, as if the very walls were recoiling from what was about to happen. These were his children. The girls he had carried on his shoulders. The girls he had stayed up late with when they had nightmares. The girls he had worked eighteen-hour days for, just to ensure they never knew the hunger he had felt as a boy.

“Three.”

With a sharp, decisive jerk, Isabella pulled the plug from the wall.

The silence that followed was deafening. The rhythmic humming stopped instantly. The ventilator gave a final, wheezing hiss as the bellows deflated for the last time. On the monitor, the green mountains turned into a flat, horizonless desert.

The long, continuous tone of the flatline alarm began to shriek, filling the room with a high-pitched scream of mechanical death.

Camila didn’t cry. She didn’t scream. She reached out and hugged her sister, a triumphant, predatory embrace. “It’s over,” she whispered into Isabella’s ear. “We’re finally free.”

They stood there for a moment, basking in the sound of the alarm, waiting for the few seconds of protocol they had rehearsed in their heads before they would run into the hall and feign a panicked tragedy.

But then, the unthinkable happened.
