I know you made it here because the story pulled you in and you absolutely had to see the truth behind that broken glass.

The silence that followed the crash was more deafening than the sound of the shattering crystal itself.

A single drop of vintage red wine splashed onto Julian’s white silk cuff, spreading like a blooming rose of blood.

He didn’t move.

His hand was still curved in the air, fingers frozen in the shape of the glass he had been seconds away from pressing to his lips.

At his side, Elena let out a piercing shriek that cut through the stunned atmosphere of the ballroom.

“What is wrong with you!?” she screamed, her voice trembling with a rage that seemed far too sharp for the occasion.

She turned her venomous gaze toward Maria, the young server who was now kneeling on the marble floor, her hands shaking as she tried to gather the jagged shards.

“You clumsy, pathetic girl!” Elena continued, her face contorting into a mask of pure hatred.

“This is a vintage bottle! This is our wedding celebration! Do you have any idea how much that suit costs? Security! Get this woman out of here right now!”

Julian finally looked down.

He saw Maria’s fingers bleeding where a shard had sliced her thumb.

But it wasn’t the blood that caught his attention.

It was Maria’s eyes.

She wasn’t looking at the broken glass, and she wasn’t looking at the angry bride.

She was looking directly at Julian with a look of desperate, primal pleading.

It was the look of someone who had just jumped into a fire to pull someone else out.

“I… I’m so sorry, sir,” Maria whispered, her voice barely audible over the murmurs of the two hundred wealthy guests.

“It slipped. I’m so, so sorry.”

“Slipped?” Elena stepped forward, her designer heels clicking dangerously close to Maria’s hand.

“You lunged at him! I saw it! You did this on purpose. You wanted to ruin our toast. You wanted to ruin my day!”

Julian reached out, placing a hand on Elena’s arm.

“Elena, calm down. It’s just a glass. Mistakes happen.”

“Mistakes?” Elena hissed, turning to him.

“Julian, look at her. She’s a mess. She probably did it for attention. People like this… they see someone like you, someone with everything, and they just want to break something.”

Julian looked back at Maria.

He had known wealth his entire life, and with it, he had known people who wanted things from him.

But he also had a keen instinct for sincerity.

Maria didn’t look like a woman seeking attention.

She looked like a woman who was terrified for her life.

Two large security guards approached, grabbing Maria by the upper arms.

They didn’t be gentle.

They hauled her to her feet, the shards of glass falling from her apron back onto the floor with a series of tiny, musical pings.

“Wait,” Julian said, his voice firm.

The guards stopped.

“Make sure she gets her hand bandaged. And pay her for the full shift. Then she can go.”

Elena turned on him, her eyes wide.

“You’re rewarding her? After she nearly ruined the most expensive toast of the night?”

“She’s bleeding, Elena,” Julian said quietly.

“Let’s just move on. We have a ceremony at the cathedral in two hours. Let’s not let a broken glass ruin the mood.”

Elena took a deep breath, smoothing down the lace of her five-figure wedding gown.

She forced a smile, though it didn’t reach her eyes.

“You’re right, darling. You’re always too kind. That’s why you need me to protect you.”

She signaled to another waiter to bring a fresh glass.

But as the waiter approached with a new bottle, Julian felt a strange chill settle in his chest.

He looked toward the exit, catching one last glimpse of Maria’s back as the guards ushered her out.

She had turned her head for a split second, and the expression on her face wasn’t one of relief.

It was one of unfinished business.

For the rest of the banquet, Julian was a ghost at his own feast.

He smiled for the photographers.

He shook the hands of business moguls and politicians.

He kissed Elena’s cheek whenever the crowd cheered.

But his mind kept returning to that moment—the way Maria hadn’t reached for the tray, but had specifically struck the glass out of his hand.

She hadn’t tripped.

She had intervened.

“Is everything okay?” Elena whispered, leaning into him.

Her perfume, usually sweet, suddenly felt suffocatingly heavy.

“You’ve barely touched your food.”

“Just nerves,” Julian lied.

“The big ‘I do’ is coming up. I guess it’s finally hitting me.”

Elena giggled, a sound that usually charmed him but now sounded strangely metallic.

“Don’t worry, Julian. Everything is going exactly according to plan. Soon, we’ll be joined forever. Just you and me. And everything you’ve built… it will be safe with us.”

She squeezed his hand, her grip surprisingly tight.

Julian looked at her—the woman he had met at a charity gala a year ago, the woman who seemed perfect in every way.

She was beautiful, educated, and shared his passion for the arts.

But as he looked at her now, he realized he didn’t know much about her life before they met.

She had appeared like a dream, and he had been too lonely to ask too many questions.

As the guests began to filter out toward the waiting limousines to head to the Great Cathedral, Julian pulled his assistant, Marcus, aside.

“Find that girl,” Julian whispered.

“The server?” Marcus asked, confused.

Publicidad

“Yes. Maria. Find out where she went. I need to speak with her.”

“Sir, the ceremony starts in forty minutes. Your bride is already in the car.”

“Just find her, Marcus. Please.”

Julian stepped into his own car, the leather interior smelling of success and privilege.

But as he stared out the window at the passing city lights, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the glass Maria broke wasn’t the only thing about to shatter.
